Communication Tools in Online Courses
Today I provided a training for prospective Blackboard instructors at my institution related to communcation tools in an online course. I always try to stress to instructors the importance of having excellent communication skills in an online course. What I have done is take my own experiences in my online courses and used that as examples of how to improve future online courses/instructors. What do you feel would constitute good "communication" practices in an online course? Should instructors respond to emails in a timely manner or simply let the inbox reach numbers in the hundreds before a reply is provided?

I never liked taking online courses. Even today I do not see that most online courses have changed since I was in college back in 2000. All online courses really offer is an online syllabus and you do the work completely on your own. Some professors are really good about communicating with their students but what I seen and experienced most are not. Most schools also charge more for online courses and the standard fees are the same even though a student may never step foot on the campus. The MTT classes is how all online courses should be done. A program like wimba gives you the classroom experience.
Very good point. I hadnt noticed that basically its an online syllabus and you actually do all the work on your own. I do feel that Wimba supplements learning greatly...and any level of communication in an online course greatly benefits the students success.
I agree with Rogelio that wimba gives the course a classroom experience. These are my first on-line courses and I have really enjoyed them.
I have taken all my classes for this degree online and basically agree with Rogelio. Everything is on the online syllabus; however, I do feel that professors must be available to answer any questions that we may have. Throughout my classes I have always communicated with my professors via email and have always gotten a prompt reply. Thanks.
